Painting from Life with Vincent Crotty

How do we translate the real world around us into shapes made of paint and color? Painting from life requires skill, efficiency, and even adrenaline to create a spontaneous “here-and-now” look on canvas. Taking inspiration from Cape Cod artist Charles Hawthorne, this workshop will guide novice as well as experienced artists through the process of painting from life, beginning with observation and striving towards accuracy in spots of color.
This two-day workshop will include theory, demonstrations, and painting on site, and will strengthen students’ understanding of design, color, and especially light. We will work indoors from photos or color copies, and outdoors, weather-permitting.
We will start each class with a slide show of paintings by great artists from the past and the present, followed by a painting demo by Vincent. After that, if the weather is nice, we will paint outside (en plein air). Students of all levels are welcome.
Acadia Festival of Traditional Music and Dance

Vincent is thrilled to be returning to Acadia Trad as Artist-in-Residence for his second year! He will capture live scenes of the festival with on-site paintings of concerts, classes, and jam sessions, and will give a talk/demonstration at the end of the week.
